Big First Quarter Leads Women’s Basketball Past Saint Peter’s, 66-53

The Canisius women's basketball team outscored Saint Peter's 19-7 in the first quarter on the way to a 66-53 victory in Jersey City, N.J., Thursday night. With the victory the Golden Griffins improved to 5-13 overall and 3-4 in conference, while the Peacocks dropped to 3-14 and 0-6 in MAAC action.
 
Depsite the big first quarter, Saint Peter's drew to within five points of the lead thanks to an Alyssa Velles three pointer with 5:31 left in the third quarter but the Griffs recovered with a 13-5 run the rest of the frame, retaking a double-digit lead t at the end.
 
The five-point deficit was as close as the Peacocks came, as the Blue and Gold kept pace with the Peacock office as both teams scored 19 in the final frame and ended the game with a 66-53 Canisius advantage.
 
Sara Hinriksdottir tallied a season-high 24 points, hitting 10-of-21 from the field and 3-of-7 from long range. Hinriksdottir also paced the team with eight rebounds and four assists. Maria Welch also tallied a season-high 18 points against the Peacocks, going 7-of-12 from the floor and a team-high 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
 
Also reaching double-digits was Margret Halfdanardottirwho tallied 10 points (4-of-10) and adding three assists.
 
Saint Peter's had two players reach double-digits, as Velles led the team with 18 points and Zoe Pero recorded 17. Dajiah Austin also led the Peacocks with 13 rebounds.
 
The Griffs offense excelled with efficiency, shooting 42 percent from the field and hit 33 percent from long range, with eight treys. Saint Peter's was held to just 35 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point land.
 
The Peacocks edged the Griffs in the battle of the boards, taking down 38 rebounds, while Canisius recorded 37 and the two teams had an equal number of turnovers with 15 each.
 
THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We made a bunch of jumpers early to open up a nice lead," head coach Terry Zeh said. "Then I thought we did a nice job of moving the ball and getting the shots we wanted in the second half. We made them take some tough shots in the defensive end as well. It's always nice to get a MAAC road win."
 
NOTES
• Canisius took the lead in the all-time series, improving to 31-30 against Saint Peter's.
• The Blue and Gold extended its winning-streak to 10 games over the Peacocks. 
• Hinriksdottir and Welch both recorded season-highs in points with 24 and 18, respectively.
• Canisius made a season-high 25 field goals against Saint Peter's.
• The Griffs tallied its highest field goal percentage (42 percent) since it shot 44 percent against Cornell on Nov. 22.
• Canisius' eight 3-pointers are the most since its Dec. 29 contest against Fairfield.
