Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sanderlin’s Near-Double-Double Sparks Women’s Basketball to 65-57 Win

Canisius women's basketball freshman, Daniel Sanderlin, tallied a season-best 17 points and nine rebounds, as the Golden Griffins defeated Siena for the first time since 2014, 65-57, at the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday. With the win Canisius improved to 4-14 and 2-4 in the MAAC, and Siena dropped to 7-9 and 2-3 in conference.

The Blue and Gold's smothering defense in the second quarter limited Siena to just five points, all of which came in the final minute. All told the Griffs outscored the Saints 15-5 in the frame, giving the team its first halftime lead since its first game of the season, as the squad led 25-18.

Canisius kept Siena at bay in the third quarter, outscoring the Saints 18-14 and leading Siena 43-32 at the end of the 10 minuts. However Siena cut the lead to just three with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, as Sabrina Piper hit a clutch trey to make it 59-56.

Despite the comeback, Margret Halfdanardottir made good on her free throws a possession later, as did Tiana Pugh and Sara Hinriksdottir later in the frame, as the Griffs staved off Siena's offensive pressure, 65-57.

Canisius had three players hit double-figures with Sanderlin's 17 leading the way. Pugh had her second-straight double-digit point total as she poured in 15 and tallied five rebounds. Hinriksdottir also reached double-digits with 14 points and nine rebounds, as she almost tallied a double-double.

Scarbrough led all scorers with a season-high 32 points, however no other Siena player reached double-digits.

The Griffs defense did its job holding Siena to just 29.7 percent from the field (19-of-64). The Saints also shot just 5-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Siena edged the Blue and Gold in the battle of the glass 44-43, but the Canisius defense forced 17 Saint turnovers and tallied nine steals.

Thoughts From Coach Zeh:
"Danielle was so strong in the post today," head coach Terry Zeh said. "We know that we've been needing some baskets around the bucket and that's why Danielle has been in the lineup. She's got the toughness down there to get finishes, get fouls, and get passes. We've been missing that, that's where we've been struggling."
