Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Challenges Manhattan in the Fourth Quarter but Comes Up Short, 59-56

The Canisius women's basketball team had the look it wanted with seven seconds remaining in the game, but Maria Welch's game-tying bid rimmed out from long range and the Golden Griffins came up short against Manhattan, 59-56 on Thursday. With the loss Canisius drops to 3-13 and 1-4 in conference play, and Manhattan improved to 6-10 and 3-2 in MAAC action.

Despite Manhattan's 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter, which put the Jaspers up 44-34, the Griffs put together a three minute, 17-5 run to take its first lead of the game, 51-49 with 2:57 left in the game.

However, down the stretch the Jaspers made the shots they needed and ended the final three minutes on a 10-5 run, with Manhattan's Imani Tatum recording five of the team's points.

The Blue and Gold was bolstered offensively by three of its players, as Sara Hinriksdottir poured in a game-leading 19 points, Tiana Pugh posted 15 points in a career-high 33 minutes, and Welch tallied 13 points and six rebounds.

Manhattan had a pair of players pace the team as Kayla Grimme was joined by Tatum, as the duo scored 17 point each.

Manhattan won the battle of the glass, 41-30 but the Griffs counteracted the deficit by scoring 23 points off 22 Jasper turnovers.

The difference of the game came down to efficiency at the charity stripe. Canisius hit just 14-of-23 from the line for 60 percent.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I think the the only thing I'm disappointed in is the outcome," head coach Terry Zeh said. "Other than that I thought we did a lot of really good things. Our compete level was really good. We played with a little more freedom when the game started flowing. We've been so tentative and playing so 'not ourselves'. The only thing I'm not happy with is the outcome, other than that we did a lot of good things. There are things we can fix. Our free throws have not been great, we'll continue to work on that. We got some great looks down the stretch, and those will fall for us eventually."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Canisius' all-time lead over Manhattan was cut to 33-29.
• For the second time in three games Canisius helped force a season-high in opponent turnovers, as the Jaspers gave-it-away 22 times.

• The 12 steals is a season-high for the Blue and Gold and the most since the team tallied 13 steals against Fairfield on Feb. 23, 2017.
