Canisius freshman Shauna Lee was named the MAAC Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week on Monday after she recorded a three-point week.Â
Lee is the first Canisius women's soccer player to be honored by the conference office this season for their athletic play. Fellow teammate, Taylor Kugler, was honored for her academic success as she was named Student of the Week earlier in the season.
In Canisius' 2-1 overtime win versus Buffalo Aug. 29, Lee's first career goal in the game's 98th minute pushed the Griffs to victory. The Mississauga, Ontario, native was set-up for the game-winning tally by sophomore Gretta Dry, who won Rookie of the Week honors twice last season. The win marked the first time that the Blue and Gold defeated the Bulls since the 2010 campaign.
In the 1-0 victory against Oakland on Sept. 1, Lee's shot on goal that was saved led to a rebound that perfectly found the head of sophomore Madeline Beaulieu, who knocked in the games' deciding goal in the 64th minute.
With the two wins last week, Canisius is off to a 3-1 start, its best opening to a season since the 2009 campaign.
The Griffs return to action Sept. 6, when the team travels to play at Cleveland State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
