Game Recap: Volleyball |

Wesley Shines as Volleyball Downs Siena, 3-0

Junior middle blocker Sara Wesley tallied a match-best 13 kills and a .684 hitting percentage, as she helped lead Canisius volleyball past Siena, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20), at the Koessler Athletic Center, on Saturday. With the victory the Golden Griffins improved to 4-12 and 2-1 in MAAC play while the Saints dropped to 0-13 and 0-2 in conference action.

Wesley shined throughout the match, tallying five kills in the Griffs' set one victory, and six in set two. She chipped in a pair and a block in the decisive third set, helping the Griffs defeat Siena in straight sets.

As a team the Blue and Gold hit .267, and limited the Saints to a hitting percentage of .146. That average is the second-highest mark on the season, only bested by the team's percentage in a 3-0 win over Hampton in the squad's opening weekend.

Also aiding the Canisius attack was freshman outside hitter Claire Leonard who notched nine kills and Leah Simmons who tallied seven. Simmons also registered a .778 hitting percentage, pacing the team as she committed no errors on nine attacks.

Sophomore setter Cassidy Ceriani paced all players in the match with 29 assists, and she also added six digs. Junior libero Donnett Hickson led the team in digs, tallying 11, with junior transfer Sofia Lopez Accosta close behind that mark with eight.

The Saints offense struggled to gain traction, as Sam Pethokoukis and Julia Burzynski both led the way for Siena, with six kills each.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAQUEZ
"It was a fabulous win," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "I wish I had more words for you but its great to see. In those moments I hope that they see and appreciate their hard work. Their hard work in practice is what makes a win like that."

"I think we had a mental shift. The theme for today was to get out there and not settle, and they didn't."

"Passing was stellar, and it afforded us to run the middle more often than usual. Our middles showed up in transition and went after it when they had the opportunity. So them being their and available was a big part of it, and passing was massive, it was a big thing."

GAME NOTES
• With its win today, Canisius still trails the all-time series 31-15, and is now 2-9 in the last 10 matches with the Saints.
• The win against Siena is the first since Sept. 21, 2014 and snaps a six match losing skid.
• Wesley's efficiency was on display against the Saints, as she posted a new career-best hitting percentage of .684.
• Wesley also matched a season-high in blocks with four, having achieved that feat now, three times in 2017
