Volleyball Drops Sunday Contest to Marist, 3-0

GAME RECAP
The Canisius volleyball program was unable to secure the weekend sweep on Sunday, falling to the Marist Red Foxes, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-10) at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the loss the Golden Griffins fall to 4-10 and 2-2 in MAAC play, while Marist improves to 5-9 and 2-1 in conference action.

The Blue and Gold challenged early in the match, dropping the first set 25-21, however Marist took over in sets two and three, besting the Griffs 25-16 and 25-10.

Sara Wesley was prevalent once again in the Canisius attack, leading the Blue and Gold with 11 kills, leading all players. She also chipped in three blocks in the losing effort.

The Red Foxes spread the offense around with Kesley Ediger (nine kills) and Nikki DeSerpa (eight kills) leading the way.

Cassidy Ceraini paced the team with 21 kills and the Gabrielle Darnaby led the Blue and Gold with five digs.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ
"One of our goals this year is to make the MAAC tournament and playing Marist really shows us what we need to work on to be in the top-six in this conference," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "We are going to need to fight to get wins against Quinnipiac, Marist and Fairfield, like we will every year. That's what I talked about post game; let's do the little things in order for us to have success against the teams that are currently in the top of our conference, so we can make the conference tournament.

I think offensively and defensively we shut down a bit in that third set, and didn't react well. The takeaway is we need to push the fight; push the basic things so we can be successful next weekend. "

GAME NOTES
• With the loss the Blue and Gold is now 14-7 all-time against Marist.
• The Red Foxes are now 9-1 in the last 10 matches against the Blue and Gold, and are currently on a nine-match winning streak.
• Wesley notched double-figure kills for the second-straight match, and has achieved the feat five times during her junior campaign.
• Wesley is beginning to hit her stride as an offensive leader, posting her third-straight hitting percentage over .500.

UP NEXT
