Volleyball Drops a Pair In Final Day of Duquesne Invite

Canisius volleyball concluded its final road tournament of the non-conference season on Saturday, as the Blue and Gold dropped the final two matches of the Duquesne Invitational, 3-1 to host Duquesne and 3-0 to Northern Kentucky. With the losses the Griffs dropped to 2-5 on the season.
 
After falling behind 2-0 in the first two frames, the Griffs battled back to take set three in convincing fashion, 25-15. However the Blue and Gold was unable to keep that momentum, dropping the decisive fourth frame, 25-15.
 
Leah Simmons and Claire Leonard led the offense, posting double-figure kills. Simmons had a career-best 16 kills, while Leonard notched 15.
 
Cassidy Ceriani directed the offense, posting 38 assists and seven digs, while Sofia Lopez Acosta, led the team in digs, tallying 19 against the Dukes.
 
In the afternoon session, the Blue and Gold met Northern Kentucky, and fell to the Norse in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18, 25-11, capping tournament play.
 
Simmons and Leonard once again paced the Blue and Gold offense, tallying seven kills and six kills, apiece. Ceriani recorded 21 assists and Lopez Acosta, notched 19 digs.
 
Lopez Acosta was honored by the tournament member coaching staffs, earning All-Tournament honors, as she averaged 5.2 digs per set through the four contests.
 
Canisius now heads home for its first home contests of the year, hosting the Canisius Invitational on Sept. 8 and 9. The Blue and Gold welcomes Eastern Washington, Charlotte and Bucknell to the Koessler Athletic Center. Friday there is a two match slate, beginning at 4 p.m., while Saturday features a four-match schedule, beginning at 10 a.m.
