Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Drops Opening Match of Canisius Invitational, 3-0 to Bucknell

Despite falling in the first set 25-15, the Golden Griffins challenged in the second and third frames, but failed to convert on six set points between the two stanzas, as the Blue and Gold fell to Bucknell in the opening round of the Canisius Invitational, 3-0 (25-15, 30-28, 31-29). With the loss the Griffs drop to 2-6 on the season while Bucknell improves to 5-2.

The Bison stunned Canisius in the first set, opening the frame on a 10-2 run, and eventually taking the set 25-15, staking claim to the 1-0 match lead.

The story changed in the second frame however as the Griffs appeared to be close to evening the score, possessing three set-points with scores of 25-24, 26-25, and 27-26, but failing to captilize, before Bucknell won the frame 30-28, and improving to 2-0 in the match.

Out of the intermission Canisius again challenged the Bison, possessing three more chances to clinch its first set win. The Griffs failed to convert with scores of 27-26, 28-27, and 29-28, and once again Bucknell outlasted Canisius, winning 31-29 and securing the straight-set victory.

While freshman Claire Leonard had another double-digit game, fresh off of her MAAC Rookie of the Year award, it was another freshman, in Andrea Diaz Lopez who had the most efficient day, pounding down eight kills and recording a .500 hitting percentage on 14 total attacks.

Sofia Lopez Acosta, managed to record 10 digs to lead the team, while Cassidy Ceriani directed traffic with 31 assists and four digs.

Sam Zebuth proved to be troublesome at the net for Bucknell, coming up with four blocks for Canisius, which as a team total 12.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ
"Being at home there was a sense of excitement and a lot of adrenaline running through our blood today," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "but once we started to focus and calm down a little bit we were able to make some plays and start working together. It was a team effort, but next team this effort needs to get us on the other side of the win/loss column.  If we can focus on the game plan then we will be set."
