Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Buffalo Smothers Women's Basketball, 73-47

GAME RECAP
A second-quarter swoon by the Canisius women's basketball team led to the team's 73-47 loss to crosstown rival, Buffalo, on Thursday night at Alumni Arena. With the loss the Golden Griffins dropped to 2-6, while Buffalo improved to 6-1.

The Griffs played with the Bulls on the scoreboard in the first and third quarters but the second frame proved to be costly, sinking the Blue and Gold's chances. Buffalo outscored Canisius , 23-12 in the second frame, giving the team a 36-22 cushion that the Griffs never overcame.

Sara Hinriksdottir paced the team in scoring, notching her eighth-straight double-figure game, notching 15 points and chipping five rebounds and two assists in the effort.

Maria Welch bounced back from a few poor outings, reaching double-figures for the fifth time this season, recording 10 points and adding five rebounds.

Three Buffalo scorers notched 14 points apiece, as Cierra Dillard, Summer Hemphill and Cassie Oursler all achieved the feat. Katherine Ups led the team in rebounding and assists, tallying seven and eight, respectively.

Buffalo defeated Canisius on the glass, taking down 49 rebounds, while the Blue and Gold recorded 37, meanwhile the Blue and Gold struggled with turnovers, coughing it up 26 times, which led to 25 Bulls' points.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We've got to make our practices more physical, we're struggling with the physicality of games right now," head coach Terry Zeh "You can see that right now, they're bumping us and we're just not handling that. That was a little bit of a problem early. Against their zone we were getting it to where we wanted but we couldn't make attacks off it. I waited too long to try some other things, but when we changed to the high-ball screen action, I thought Liv (Olivia Vernon) was fantastic in that third quarter."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Canisius drops to 30-15 all-time against Buffalo.
• Sara Hinriksdotir secured her eight-straight double-figure game for the Blue and Gold.
