Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Turnovers Plague Women’s Basketball in Defeat to Morehead State

GAME RECAP
Canisius women's basketball turned the ball over a season-high 31 times, leading to 36 Morehead State points, as the Golden Griffins fell to the Eagles, 76-52 at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the loss Canisius dropped to 2-7, while Morehead State improved to 8-3.

Despite a closely contested first quarter, the second frame proved to once again be a difference-maker, as the Eagles stormed out to a 21-9 advantage in the frame, staking claim to a 41-23 advantage, a lead the Blue and Gold never recovered from.

Sara Hinriksdotter led all scorers in the game, as she tallied 17 points, and shot 7-of-12 from the field. She added three rebounds and one assist in the losing effort. Offense was once again at a premium for Canisius, with no other player posting double-digits.

Margret Halfdanardottir came close, as she shot .500 from the floor, (4-of-8) and totaled nine points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Eagles had four players reach double-digit point totals, with Erin Blaine's effort leading the charge. Blaine registered 16 points, and added eight rebounds. Miranda Crockett (14 points), Darianne Seward (11 points), and Tierra McGowan (10 points), rounded out the double-figure scorers.

The Eagles shot 44.1 percent from the floor and narrowly edged the Griffs on the glass, outrebounding Canisius, 38-37, however the turnovers proved to be the difference. Morehead State turned it over just 17 times as compared to Canisius' 31.

The Blue and Gold rebounded from shooting just 21 percent (3-of-14) in the second quarter to finish the game with a 37 percent field goal mark, but shot just 29.4 from beyond the arc.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We're scared and tentative," head coach Terry Zeh said. "When we start out and things are going well, things are ok but once a team makes a little bit of a run, which is basketball, we sort of fold our tents. We don't have a lot of moxy right now to battle through that. We are just really playing scared. Everyone on our team is playing with no confidence. That's what it comes down to, we lose our confidence and then we're done."

GAME NOTES:
• The Griffs fall to 0-2 all-time against Morehead State with today's loss.
• Hinriksdottir enjoys playing the Eagles, posting her second double-digit effort in as many tries. Last season she posted 29 points, her career-high.
• Canisius' 31 turnovers is a season-high.
• Halfdanardottir matched a career-high in rebounds with six. It is the third time she's achieved that feat.
Olivia Vernon posted four assists which is a new season-high for the young guard.
