Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Opens Up Holiday Classic with a 63-46 loss to UTRGV

Despite cutting the Rio Grande Valley lead to just three points early in the second quarter, the Canisius women's basketball team was unable to fend off the Vaqueros, dropping the opening contest in the Holiday Classic, 63-46. With the loss Canisius dropped to 2-8 overall, while UTRGV improved to 10-4.

With the score 21-11, with 7:36 remaining in the second quarter, the Blue and Gold went on a 10-3 run, aided by a pair of Margret Halfdanardottir buckets, and cut the lead to 24-21.

However the Vaqueros turned the tide moments later, streaking out to a 15-2 run the remainder of the frame and ended the first half with a 16-point lead, a hole the Griffs never managed to dig out of.

Halfdanardottir led an offense that spread the ball around, as she paced the team with eight points and two assists. Three players were next on the scoring board, as Maria Welch, Olivia Vernon and Tiana Pugh all tallied seven points.

Team leading scorer, Sara Hinriksdottir had her double-digit point streak snapped at nine, as she tallied six points and seven rebounds.

Quynn Huggins and Laura Van Tilburg led the UTRGV offense, recording 19 points and 10 points, respectively.

While turnovers have been an Achilles heel for the Blue and Gold, the team managed to curb the trend against the Vaqueros, giving it away 15 times, as opposed to UTRGV's 10 turnovers.

Rebounding was also a trouble area in the contest, as the Griffs were outrebounded 46-36.

Most likely the biggest deficit for Canisius came in its 3-point shooting, as the team made just 3-of-18 from beyond the arc for a 16.7 percent mark.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We had a few more segments of good basketball than we've had in the last few games," head coach Terry Zeh said. "I was pleased with us cutting down on our turnovers, and they way we handled the full court pressure in the second half was encouraging. We still have way too many mental mistakes. Hopefully we can learn and play even better tomorrow against a very good Middle Tennessee team."

GAME NOTES
• That was the first ever meeting between UTRGV and the Golden Griffins.
• It's the second time in three years the Blue and Gold have played a game in the state of Texas, as the team played Lamar and Texas in 2015.
• Hinriksdottir had her consecutive game double-digit point streak snapped at nine games with her six point effort tonight.
• It is third time in her career that a streak of nine was snapped at 10 for the junior forward.

UP NEXT
The Griffs finish up the tournament tomorrow with a 5:30 p.m. (EST) matchup with Middle Tennessee. It will be the final non-conference game of the season before Canisius hosts Fairfield on Dec. 29, in a women's and men's doubleheader at the KAC.
