Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Despite Pugh’s Career-Day, Women’s Hoops Comes Up Short

Sophomore Tiana Pugh had her best game as a Golden Griffin on Wednesday, pouring in 19 points and five rebounds, however the Canisius women's basketball team came up short against Middle Tennessee, 55-45 in Ediburgh, Texas. The second final game of the UTRGV Holiday Classic ended Canisius' non-conference schedule as the squad dropped to 2-9 overall. The Blue Raiders improved to 7-5.

The Griffs hung with Middle Tennessee throughout the game, and looked poised to take the lead in the contest with 4:50 remaining in regulation, as Pugh drained a pair of free throw chances to make it 42-41, Blue Raiders. However Middle Tennessee went on a 13-4 run in the final five minutes to stake claim to the 55-45 victory.

Pugh's 19 points led the offense, meanwhile Sara Hinriksdottir battled through an erratic day shooting (3-of-10) and ended up with 12 points. The Iceland native went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe buoying her point total.

Sarah Cooley and Anna Sweny led the team in rebounding with six each, meanwhile Cooley capped her day leading the team in assists with four.

The Blue Raiders were led offensively by Abbey Sisson who posted 28 points, while Jess Louro tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds for the double-dobule.

The Griffs were outrebounded by Middle Tennessee 44-32, and lost the turnover battle 18-16.

Both teams played stifling defense as Canisius shot just 13-of-44 (29.5 percent) while the Blue Raiders tallied 19-of-56 (33.9 percent).

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We knew it was going to be a low scoring, grind it out game," head coach Terry Zeh said. "I was really proud of how hard we fought and played defense against a team with significantly bigger players inside. Tiana was fantastic on both ends of the floor. We didn't get the win we wanted but we made steps forward today."

GAME NOTES
• This was the first ever matchup between the Griffs and Blue Raiders.
• Pugh shattered her previous game-high of 9 points set against Cornell earlier in the year with her 19 point performance.
• The Blue and Gold tallied a season-high seven blocks against the Blue Raiders.
• The Griffs seven blocks in the most the team has tallied in a game since its nine blocks against Iona on Feb. 1, 2016.
