Benediktsson, Preis Honored for Academics by CoSIDA

Canisius student-athletes Bjarki Benediktsson and Lucian Preis have been named 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® selections for men's soccer, the organization announced.

The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable). No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

The duo was recognized for District I, which includes NCAA Division I student-athletes from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Canisius joined fellow Empire State program Syracuse as the only schools to have multiple members on the District I team.

A redshirt junior from Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Benediktsson is a history major with a cumulative GPA of 3.80. A two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection, Benediktsson has been named to the Canisius dean's list in each of his five semesters on Main Street.

On the field, Benediktsson garnered All-MAAC Second Team honors after starting all 18 games for the Griffs during the regular season. Benediktsson paced the Griffs with nine assists, highlighted by a program-record matching three assists during a 4-3 victory at Saint Peter's on Oct. 14.

A senior from Lörrach, Germany, Preis is a dual psychology and communication Studies major with a cumulate GPA of 3.81. A three-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection, Preis has been named to the Canisius Dean's List in each of his previous six semesters.

Preis appeared in 17 games for the Griffs during the regular season, recording six assists to rank tied for second on the team in that category.
