Marist Halts Volleyball’s Win Streak, 3-0

Canisius reeled off three-straight MAAC regular season wins for the first time since 2013 this past weekend, but Marist halted the win streak with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 31-29) victory in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Saturday. With the loss the Golden Griffins drop to 10-15 overall and 8-7, while Marist improves to 13-13 overall and 10-5 in the MAAC).

The Blue and Gold surrendered early 4-0 and 5-0 leads in the first two frames, as the squad found it difficult to dig itself out those holes and subsequently drop to 0-2 early on in the match.

Out of the break it appeared the Griffs had turned the tide, opening up the set with a 4-1 lead and used that momentum throughtout the frame, having the set point within reach, up 25-24. However Marist battled back to knot the score.
The two teams played to five tied scores following the Red Foxes point but eventually Marist closed the match out with two-straight points to win the set 31-29 and the match 3-0.

Marist was led by Nikki DeSerpa (14 kills) and Megan Fergus (12 kills), while the Blue and Gold was paced by Leah Simmons (nine kills) and Claire Leonard and Andrea Diaz Lopez (six kills).

Cassidy Ceriani posted 25 assists to lead the Canisius effort, while Sofia Lopez Acosta tallied eight digs to lead the Griffs.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ
"in the first set Marist outdefended us 18-9 and had better production offensively from their hitters," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "Overally they were more agressive. In the second set we had three hitters hitting in the negative with a solid perfromance coming from Andrea, as she was hitting over .600. But it takes a team we displayed that set three. Our numbers in the final set still weren't impressive but we played together and it made a huge difference."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Canisius now holds a 14-8 overall advantage against the Red Foxes.
• However Marist has dominated the recent history in the last 12 matches having gone 10-2 against Canisius in that span.
