Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Troublesome First Half Sinks Women’s Basketball

A slow start by Canisius, and three-straight 3-pointers to open the game set the tone on Wednesday night, as the visiting Oakland Golden Grizzlies defeated the Golden Griffins 83-48 in non-league action in the Koessler Athletic Center. Oakland moved to 3-3 with the win, while Canisius slipped to 2-4 with the loss.

Oakland shot 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range in the game's opening half to take a 45-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, Canisius was outscored 38-32 in the final two quarters, and the Blue and Gold struggled with turnovers, ending the night with a total of 20, which the Golden Grizzlies turned into 23 points.

Despite the struggles on offense, Canisius junior Sara Hinriksdottir scored a team-high 15 points, hitting 6-of-10 from the field and draining 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Anna Sweny grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the losing effort for the Griffs, which ended the night with a 48-41 advantage on the glass.

The Golden Grizzlies had four players hit double-figures in the game with Sha'Keya Graves' 20 points pacing the team. Taylor Gleason (17 points), Leah Somerfield (12 points) and Taylor Jones (10 points) also reached double-figures.

THOUGHTS FROM CANISIUS HEAD COACH TERRY ZEH
"From the start we weren't ready to play and never really got ready to play. [Oakland] went right at us. We didn't play any defense; We didn't communicate. There wasn't a thing we did for forty minutes that was right. That's basically what it was. I don't know why. We chatted downstairs and they need to figure out why because you can't play college basketball that way, that's for sure."

GAME NOTES
• This was the third all-time meeting between the schools, with Oakland leading the series 2-1.
• In the series history, the home team hasn't won a game between the Golden Griffins and Golden Grizzlies. The road team has won every game so far.
• Hinriksdottir hit double-digits for the sixth-straight game.
• The Blue and Gold had 12 assists on 19 made field goals, posting assists on 63 percent of its field goals.
