Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cornell Hands Women’s Basketball a Pre-Thanksgiving Loss, 67-59

The Canisius women's basketball team turned the ball over 21 times, and was just 8-of-15 from the free throw line, as the Cornell Big Red dealt the Golden Griffins a 67-59 loss at the Koessler Athletic Center on Wednesday.

Cornell used 20-point quarters both in the third and fourth to distance itself in the game, as the Griffs coughed up the basketball seven times down the stretch in the final frame.

On offense Maria Welch, led the way for the Golden Griffins with 18 points and five rebounds. Sara Hinriksdottir did manage to reach the double-digit plateau with 11 points, but was uncharacteristically sporadic shooting, hitting just 3-of-10 from the field and 0-of-3 from beyond the arc. She did lead the team in rebounds and assists, once again, tallying seven and six, respectively.

For the third straight-game Shannon Conely set a career-high in points, as she tallied nine, going 4-of-5 from the field. Likewise Tiana Pugh recorded nine points for the Griffs.

Canisius didn't have an answer for Cornell's Samantha Widmann, who tallied 27 points and six rebounds in the winning effort. Christine Ehland also hit double-figures for the Big Red with 17.

The story of the game can be found in the turnover numbers, as Canisius gave the ball away 21 times, while Cornell only turned it over seven times. The Big Red tallied 25 points off of those 21 giveaways. Meanwhile the Griffs struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 53.3 percent.

Canisius did win the battle of the glass, out-rebounding the Big Red, 38-36, and shot 44 percent as opposed to Cornell's mark of 36.9.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I didn't think we were ready to play," head coach Terry Zeh said. "I didn't think we were ready to play all game. They were more ready and we'd make a little run but we couldn't stop Widmann. We couldn't get to places and keep her in front of us. They just got all kinds of offensive rebounds in key situations. They wanted the game more than we did. We didn't play with any passion and enthusiasm and we turned the ball over too many times."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Canisius is 7-3 all-time against Cornell.
• It was the first time the Big Red had ever won when playing at the Koessler Athletic Center. Canisius is 4-1 all-time against Cornell at home.
• Welch and Hinriksdottir extended their double-figure scoring streak to four-straight as both hit the double-figure plateau.
•For the third time in four games Hinriksdottir scored double-figure points and tallied over five rebounds and five assists with seven and six.
