Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stingy Defense and Balanced Scoring Lead Women’s Hoops Past Bowling Green

The Canisius women's basketball program had three players in double-figures, and held Bowling Green to just 30 percent from the floor and 20 percent from beyond the arc, as the Golden Griffins won its first road contest of the year, 71-57. With the win Canisius improves to 2-1 on the season and hands Bowling Green its first loss of the year, as the Falcons drop to 3-1.

After heading into halftime down 39-35, the Blue and Gold came out and smothered the Falcons, outscoring Bowling Green 19-7, to stake claim to a 54-46 lead. Canisius continued that trend into the fourth quarter, holding Bowling Green to just 11 points and scoring 17, to secure its second victory of the season.

Sara Hinriksdottir continued her trend of being a do-it-all type of player, tallying 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, leading the team in all three categories.

The Griffs offense received offense from the likely producers as Maria Welch posted 12 points and seven rebounds, while Margret Halfdanardottir notched 11 points and two assists.

For Bowling Green, Sydney Lambert and Jane Uecker led the team in scoring with point totals of 12 and 10, respectively.

Despite the losing effort, the Falcons outrebounded the Griffs, 40-36, however Canisius turned the ball two-times fewer than the Falcons, recording 10 turnovers to Bowling Green's 12.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I thought we got great contributions from everybody," head coach Terry Zeh said. "We really locked in defensively in our zone in the second half and we limited them to one shot on a lot of key possessions in the second half. I thought Shannon Conely had a few really nice plays at key times and Sara really flowed the game well for us"

GAME NOTES
• With the win, Canisius records its first ever win over Bowling Green, and now trail the all-time series 1-2.
• With her double-digit point day and eight rebounds and seven assist, Sara Hinriskdottir recorded 10-or-more points and 5-or-more assists and rebounds for the fourth time in her career and second-time in three games.
