Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vernon's Late Layup Lifts Women's Basketball Past Bonnies in OT, 71-69

With the game knotted up at 69-69, Canisius women's basketball freshman, Olivia Vernon took a pass from Sara Hinriksdottir and layed in the game-winning bucket, with six seconds remaining in overtime, to lift the Golden Griffins over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 71-69. With the win Canisius improves to 1-1, while St. Bonaventure drops to 1-2.

The two teams traded leads throughout the matchup, however SBU took a late 61-60 lead with 1:05 left in regulation, as Mariah Ruff drained a free throw chance.

Buffalo, N.Y. native, Anndea Zeigler failed to convert either of her free throw chances on the other end, off a foul, but two possessions later, provided the Griffs the game-tying point, with :26 seconds left to force overtime.

The extra frame was just as tight as regulation, as the two teams reached tied scores three times before Vernon's eventual game-winning layup.

Canisius had four players reach double-figures in the contest with Maria Welch notching 18 points and chipping in three rebounds. Hinriksdottir again showed a propensity to produce in many categories, earning the double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. She also added three assists.

Vernon secured her first double-digit performance and showed her tenacity on in the paint as she tallied eight rebounds. Meanwhile Margret Halfdanardottir continued her double-digit streak, notching 12 points and five assists to aid the Canisius attack.

St. Bonaventure was led by a pair of 20-point producers as Maria Ruff tallied 23 points and seven boards, while McKenna Maycock scored 21 points and seven rebounds.

As a team the Griffs won the battle of the glass, taking down 47 rebounds, while SBU only tallied 40, while the Blue and Gold turned it over 11 times and the Bonnies nine.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"What we saw today was growth from Friday," head coach Terry Zeh said. "and some particular things we were trying to work on offensively and defensivly. Tonight, I saw that growth. Whatever happens, happens at the end of the game. However If we can make that growth, then we're taking steps forward. If those steps are enough for us to win, great, but if not we'll keep pushing forward. But I saw some defensive things discipline-wise that we did today that we didn't do against Colgate and same thing offensively. We didn't get sticky with the basketball, we moved it around and that was really great.

GAME NOTES
• With the win Canisius is now 28-25 all-time against St. Bonaventure.

• It was also the second-straight win over St. Bonaventure after heading SBU a loss in Olean, N.Y. last season.
• Hinriksdottir's double-double today was just the second of her career after she recorded the first one against Rider on Feb. 12, 2016.
