Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Despite Dominant Second Quarter, Colgate Slips Past Women’s Basketball, 70-63

Canisius women's basketball outscored Colgate 22-6 in the second frame, erasing a nine-point Raider lead, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Griffins fell to Colgate, 70-63 at the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday. With the loss Canisius drops to 0-1 to open the season while the Raiders improve to 1-0.

The Blue and Gold bounced back from a sloppy first quarter, imposing its will both offensively and defensively in the second frame. Canisius shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 8-of-16 and holding Colgate to just 3-of-14 and 0-of-5 from beyond the arc.

The offense dried up in the second half, as the Griffs shot 5-of-14 in the third frame and just 4-of-17 in the final quarter. The Blue and Gold was outscored 23-17 in the third stanza and a 16-8 in the final frame.

Margret Halfdanardottir was locked-in early and often in the game, notching 18 points to kick off her senior campaign. Two other Griffs reached double-figures with Sara Hinriksdottir shaking off a quiet first half and finishing the game with 11 points, while Maria Welch recorded 10.

Hinriksdottir continued her renaissance-woman trend as she did a little bit of everything, leading the team with eight rebounds and seven assists.

Colgate had four players reach double figures with Summer King (15 points) leading the team and Rachel Thompson (13 points), Kateri Stone (13 points) and Tegan Graham (10 points), reaching the plateau.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I thought we were inconsistent with our play, that's probably the story of the day," head coach Terry Zeh said. "All the things from the defense to offense, we just weren't consistent throughout. The last eight or nine minutes of the game we were very stagnant offensively, we didn't get any flow or movement and we didn't guard on the other end. I think that's what cost us."

"We're going to try to work on the things, we as a group, didn't do well. The little things like defending and close outs and try to get better at those fine details that make the difference in a game."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Canisius still leads the all-time series against the Raiders 23-13.
• Despite the loss The Blue and Gold is still 14-4 all-time at the Koessler Athletic Center against Colgate.
