Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Blanks Rival Niagara, 5-0

Canisius matched its season high with five goals as it defeated longtime rival Niagara, 5-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Sophomore Troy Brady scored twice while juniors Alex Grattarola and Will Pauls and freshman Filippo Tamburini also found the back of the net to pace a Golden Griffins (8-2-1, 2-0-1 MAAC) attack that out-shot the Purple Eagles (1-8-1, 0-2-0 MAAC) by a 24-10 margin.

Tamburini staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead just 10:01 into the contest, putting a loose ball under Niagara keeper Steve Casey from close range for his sixth goal of the season.

Grattarola doubled the Griffs cushion to 2-0 a little more than 12 minutes later when he headed home junior Bjarki Benediktsson's corner kick for his fifth tally of the campaign.

The score would remain that way until Canisius rattled off three goals in a 4:30 span late in the second half to determine the final margin.

Brady opened the sequence with back-to-back tallies less than a minute apart, finding the back of the net at 84:29 mark on a feed from junior Melvin Blair before notching his second taly just 51 seconds later thanks to a pass from senior Hakeem Milson.

Pauls closed out the scoring in the 89th minute, putting home his own rebound from the left side for his first collegiate tally.

Senior Marco Trivellato posted his third shutout of the season for the Griffs, finishing with two saves. Casey recorded 11 saves in goal for the Purple Eagles.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"The game tonight was a lot closer than the score line suggests. Every time we play Niagara it is a tough game and tonight was no different.

"It's always nice to beat your biggest rival, but getting three points from the game was more important for us tonight. We will enjoy the win tonight and get back to work tomorrow as we prepare for another tough game against Quinnipiac this weekend."
