Canisius sophomore Madi Weathers went 3-0 last week in three starts against Niagara, Monmouth and Rider, and for her efforts the MAAC office announced today that Weathers has been named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week. The Westminster, Calif., native is the fourth different Golden Griffin to earn a weekly award from the conference this season.
Weathers earned the win in all three of her starts last week, as the Griffs posted a 5-1 record in three MAAC doubleheaders. In Canisius' 7-1 win at Niagara April 26, she allowed one run on nine hits to go with four strikeouts, and she followed the outing by tossing a complete-game five-hitter against Monmouth at home April 30. In that win over the Hawks, Weathers gave up just one unearned run to go with five strikeouts.
Weathers earned her fifth-straight MAAC victory May 1 when she allowed four runs and scattered 11 hits through five innings in Canisius' 11-6 win over Rider. In that game, she fanned a season-high seven batters and improved her record to 8-7 on the year.
Canisius will close out the 2016 regular season this weekend with a pair of MAAC doubleheaders on the road. The Griffs, who are 20-28 overall and 11-5 in MAAC play, will take on Quinnipiac May 6 at 1 p.m., before meeting MAAC leader Marist on Saturday, May 7. Those two games against the Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., will start at noon.
