Box Score The Canisius College men's lacrosse team suffered its third-straight defeat on Tuesday night, losing to Robert Morris, 15-6, at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs are now 3-7 on the season, while the Colonials improve to 5-7.
Senior Mike Vavonese registered his first career multi-goal game in the loss, while classmate Mike Perrino recorded a career-best three assists. Senior Vince Gravino also added two tallies with sophomore Steven Coss and freshman Mario Caito also chipping in a goal.
Sophomore Liam Ganzhorn made a career-best 14 saves, while senior defender Brendan Barren collected a game-high three caused turnovers.
A poor opening 30 minutes to the contest put the Griffs into a hole they couldn't recover from. Robert Morris netted the game's first three goals before a tally from Vavonese pulled Canisius within two, 3-1, at the end of one. The Colonials, however, dominated possession in the second frame – winning all 10 faceoffs – and after the schools traded goals to start the quarter, Robert Morris used a 6-1 run to head into the intermission with a 10-3 lead.
The Colonials scored the only two goals of the third quarter before each team netted three times in the fourth stanza for the 15-6 final score.
Robert Morris outshot the Griffs, 40-27, on the night, including a 22-8 edge in the first half. The Colonials also won the faceoff battle, 16-9, while holding a 33-26 advantage in ground balls. Luke Laszkiewicz dominated for the Colonials with nine points and eight goals on the night.
Canisius now turns its attention toward MAAC play where the Griffs face a must-win game on Saturday against Detroit to keep their season alive. Canisius' Senior Day contest is slated for 7 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
