Softball Earns Split at Miami (Ohio) Invitational

The Canisius softball team went 1-1 on Saturday in a pair of games on the first day of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational, falling 8-0 in five innings to Western Illinois before bouncing back for a 5-2 win over IUPUI. The Golden Griffins are now 3-11 on the season.

Canisius will close out their weekend road trip to Miami (Ohio) in Oxford, Ohio on Sunday with a pair of games against the same two teams. The Blue and Gold will play Western Illinois at 10 a.m., before meeting IUPUI at 12:30 p.m.

Game One - Western Illinois 8, Canisius 0 - 5 innings
Western Illinois freshman pitcher Emily Ira tossed her first collegiate no-hitter and teammate Tierney Bottino went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI as the Leatherneck beat Canisius 8-0 in five innings. The no-hitter was the first for a Western Illinois pitcher since 2010.

Canisius sophomore Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.

Game Two - Canisius 5, IUPUI 2
Canisius freshman Allie Block earned her first career win in the circle and she was able to help her own cause with a pair of RBI as the Griffs defeated IUPUI 5-2 Saturday evening.

Block allowed just two runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts in the complete-game victory. After giving up a run in the bottom of the third, Block put the Blue and Gold ahead for good with a double down the left field line that knocked in a pair of runs. Canisius added a single run in the fourth for a 3-1 lead, and then leading 3-2 late in the game, the Griffs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top-half of the seventh inning.

Block was the only player to record a multi-hit game in the Griffs' win. Senior Tori Nappo recorded a double and scored a run in the winning effort.
