Softball Rallies to Get Weekend Split in Ohio

Canisius junior Lindsey Silfer hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season and drove in three RBI, sophomore pitcher Erika Mackie earned the win in the circle and freshman Allie Block earned her first career save as the Golden Griffins scored a 5-3 win over IUPUI in the second game of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, Sunday morning.

The Griffs dropped the first game of the day to Western Illinois by a score of 2-1 when the Leathernecks scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Canisius went 2-2 on the weekend in Ohio, moving its record to 4-12 overall.

Canisius will return to action March 11-13 at the Capital Invitational, hosted by George Washington, in Washington, D.C. The Griffs will play the host Colonials Friday, March 11 at 12:30 p.m.

Game One - Western Illinois 2, Canisius 1
An RBI-double by Western Illinois senior Tierney Bottino with two outs in the bottom of the seventh helped lift the Leathernecks to a 2-1 win over Canisius. The win moved Western Illinois to 5-11 on the year.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when freshman Lauren Castro helped her own cause with an RBI-double to the gap in right center. Western Illinois tied the game at 1-1 in the home-half of the fifth, and the game remained tied at 1-1 until the last of the seventh, when Bottino hit a walk-off double to left field that allowed teammate Kaycee Hart to score from first base.

After being no-hit by Western Illinois on Saturday, Canisius posted three hits against Western Illinois on Sunday. Castro and Silfer each had doubles in the loss, while Samantha Sharkey also recorded a base hit for the Blue and Gold. Sophomore Moriah Harris scored the Griffs' lone run.

Castro took the loss for Canisius after she allowed two runs on nine hits to go with a strikeout and a walk in 6.2 innings of work. Western Illinois reliever Brooke Stulga earned the win n the cirlce after she threw three innings of scoreless relief and allowed two hits while fanning two.

Game Two - Canisius 5, IUPUI 3
Training 2-0 after one inning of play, Canisius broke out with four runs in the second and a solo tally in the third en route to a 5-3 win over IUPUI in the finale of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational. The win over the Jaguars is Canisius' second in the last two days.

In the second, Harris led the frame off with a double, and she later scored the team's first run on an illegal pitch. After a pair of walks were issued to freshman Destiny Holani and senior Alexis Roman, Silfer put the Blue and Gold up 4-2 after she smacked a three-run homer to left. Canisius added a fifth run to take a 5-2 lead in the third when senior Meghan Cuda scored on a sac-fly to right off the bat of Harris.

IUPUI scored a run in the fifth off Mackie, but that was all for the Jaguars' offense, as the Scranton, Pa., native picked up the win, her third of the season. Mackie allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work before turning the game over to Block. Block came on in relief and recorded her first career save after she gave up one hit and struck out two in two innings in the circle.
