Softball Comes Up Short at Columbia Classic

After posting a pair of shutout victories on Friday, the Canisius softball team came up on the short end in the Golden Griffins' final two games at the Columbia Classic in New York City. Canisius lost the first game 4-3 when Fairleigh Dickinson's Kellie Natham ripped a walk-off, two-run double with down down in the bottom of the seventh, and then the Blue and Gold lost to Columbia 3-1 in eight innings when Columbia's Maddie Gott hit a two-run walk-off homer with two down in the frame.

Canisius is now 7-20 on the season after going 2-2 at the Columbia Classic. The Griffs will return to action next week with a pair of games against cross-town rival Buffalo. Canisius and UB will play a single-game Tuesday, March 29 at Buffalo, and then to two teams will square off at the Demske Sports Complex Wednesday, March 30 in Canisius' 2016 home opener. Both games are set to begin at 4 p.m.

Game One - Fairleigh Dickinson 4, Canisius 3
Canisius and the Knights (5-16) were knotted at 2-2 until the top of the sixth when the Griffs took a 3-2 lead on an RBI-single to center by junior Jessica Berzins. In the home-half of the seventh, FDU loaded the bases with two outs, setting up Natham, who roped a double to the gap in right-center that pushed two runs across.

Canisius had six hits in the loss to Fairleigh Dickinson, with seniors Alexis Roman and Meghan Cuda recording doubles. Freshman Lauren Castro was also credited with a two-base hit in the loss, while freshman Destiny Holani had a base hit and a run batted in.

Canisius sophomore Madi Weathers took the loss in the circle after she allowed two runs on three hits while fanning four in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Erika Mackie started for the Blue and Gold and gave up two runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts. FDU reliever Cheryl Lopez earned the win after she gave up one run on one hit in three innings of work.

Game Two - Columbia 3, Canisius 1 - 8 innings
With two outs and a runner on second base, Columbia shortstop Maddie Gott's two-run homer over the fence in left-center to lift the host Lions (4-17) to a 3-1 win over Canisius in extra-innings. The win snapped Columbia's 13-game losing streak.

Canisius wasted little time scoring against Columbia, posting a run in the top-half of the first when Roman was able to race around the bases on a single by junior Lindsey Silfer. From there, the Lions knotted the game at 1-1 in the home-half of the third on an RBI-triple by Kerry Cook. The score would remain knotted through the middle of the eighth, where Columbia won the game with the walk-off homer.

Silfer had two of Canisius' four hits in the loss, with Roman and sophomore Moriah Harris also recording hits for the Blue and Gold. Canisius freshman Allie Block took the loss in the circle after she allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit. She also fanned four in 2.2 innings of work.
