Softball Beats Cross-Town Rival Buffalo, 4-1

Canisius junior Lindsey Silfer hit a three-run homer in the first and sophomore pitcher Erika Mackie went the distance and fanned five as the Golden Griffins defeated cross-town rival Buffalo 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field in Buffalo, N.Y. The win improved the Blue and Gold to 8-20 on the season while the Bulls fell to 9-20 with the loss.

Silfer's three-run shot, her team-leading seventh of the season, came in the top-half of the first to give Canisius a 3-0 cushion. After junior Jessica Berzins and senior Alexis Roman started the game with back-to-back singles, Silfer stepped to the plate with one out and drove the second pitch she saw over the fence in center field for her 15th career home run, which ranks third all-time in program history.

Those three runs were more than enought for Mackie, who moved her record to 5-8 on the year after she allowed one run on four hits to go with five strikeouts. Canisius added an insurance run in the fifth on a fielder's choice by Roman, which allowed junior Samantha Sharkey to score from third base. Buffalo got its only run in the seventh on an RBI-single to left by Lauren Gambone.

Canisius pounded out nine hits in the victory, with Berzins, Silfer and Sharkey all recording multi-hit efforts for the Griffs. Freshman Denver Keller had her first career double for Canisius, while Berzins, Roman and Sharkey all stole a base in the game.

Canisius and Buffalo will play again on Wednesday, March 30, in Canisius' 2016 home opener. First pitch at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4 p.m.
