Softball Ends Skid with Win over Georgetown

The Canisius softball team ended its five-game losing skid Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Georgetown on the first day of the Cherry Blossom Classic, hosted by George Mason, in Fairfax, Va. Canisius (5-17) started the day with a 9-1 loss to St. Francis in six innings before the Golden Griffins came back to defeat the Hoyas in the nightcap.

Canisius is scheduled to play two games on Saturday, starting at 11:15 a.m., when the team takes on host George Mason. The Griffs will also play Georgetown again on Saturday, with first pitch set for 3:45 p.m.

Game One - St. Francis 9, Canisius 1 - 6 innings
The St. Francis Red Flash (13-12) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early with a 9-1 victory. St. Francis banged out 12 hits in the win, while starting pitcher Alexis Bower allowed one run on four hits while striking out four and walking three.

Canisius junior Jessica Berzins had two hits in the loss for the Griffs, while fellow junior Lindsey Silfer and freshman Allie Block also recorded base hits in the losing effort. Bower helped her own cause by going 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the victory for the Red Flash.

Game Two - Canisius 4, Georgetown 1
Canisius trailed 1-0 after two innings, but a three-run third for the Blue and Gold helped put an end to the team's five-game losing streak. Canisius knotted the game at 1-1 on an RBI-triple by Berzins which allowed senior Tori Nappo to score from first, and senior Alexis Roman drove in Berzins when she reached safely on a fielder's choice. Later in the frame, Silfer ripped an RBI-single that pushed Roman across the dish.

The Griffs tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI-double by Silfer. Canisius had nine hits in the win, with Berzins, Silfer and sophomore Moriah Harris all recording multiple hits in the victory. Freshman Lauren Castro earned her first career win in the circle after she allowed just one run on five hits while fanning one and walking one.
