George Mason and Weather End Softball's Weekend

The host George Mason Patriots scored seven runs in the game's first two innings and freshman pitcher Marina Vitalich held Canisius to one run on four hits as George Mason posted a 9-1, five-inning victory over the Golden Griffins at the Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, Va.

The Griffs' last two games at the Cherry Blossom Classic were washed out because of rain. Canisius is now 5-18 on the season.

The Patriots (10-9) scored twice in the bottom of the first and then tacked on five more runs in the second to post a 7-0 lead after two frames. Canisius trailed George Mason 8-0 after four, but the Griffs got on the scoreboard in the top-half of the fifth on an RBI-double by senior Tori Nappo that pushed freshman Allie Block across the plate from second base. Block reached in the fifth thanks to a two-out double of her own.

Sophomore Erika Mackie took the loss in the corcle after she allowed seven runs on six hits to go with two walks and a strikeout. Vitalich improved to 5-5 on the season with the complete-game victory.

Canisius will return to action on Wednesday, March 23, when the team plays host to cross-town rival Buffalo in the 2016 home opener. First pitch in the single-game is set for 4 p.m.
