Box Score Hobart netted the final three goals of regulation before scoring in the second overtime to earn an 8-7 victory against the Canisius College men's lacrosse team on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Griffs to 1-2 on the season, while the Statesmen improve to 4-3.
“It was a great game and a great atmosphere against a very well coached and talented Hobart team,” said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. “Once again, we were leading going into the fourth and we weren't able to close it out. I'm proud of our effort, dedication and sacrifice but we are having difficulty learning how to win as a young team. We need to continue to work to get better but this one stings. We have a big conference game against Siena on Saturday and we have to turn around, forget this game and get back to work. I know we have the players to do so.”
Sophomore Connor Kearnan matched his career high with five points, three goals and two assists. Senior Nick Tuttle also tied his personal best with three points, scoring twice with one assist. Senior Vince Gravino and junior Jeff Edwards also scored for the Griffs.
Sophomore Liam Ganzhorn recorded 10 saves for Canisius, while also adding his first collegiate point with an assist. Senior Brendan Barren and freshman Logan Monroe each added a team-best two caused turnovers on the night.
The Griffs started strong in the contest and netted the game's opening three goals. Edwards scored the only goal of the first quarter with 11:04 remaining before Tuttle scored twice in the opening three minutes of the second frame for a 3-0 lead. Hobart finally got on the scoreboard after more than 21 minutes of action without a goal before Keanan scored after a long clearing pass from Ganzhorn. The Statesmen finished the scoring in the period as the teams headed into the intermission with Canisius ahead, 4-2.
In addition to his first-half assist, Ganzhorn was nearly unbeatable in the opening 30 minutes of action. The sophomore recorded eight saves in the first two quarters to help the Griffs build the early advantage.
Canisius outscored Hobart, 2-1, in the third period to take a 6-3 lead into the final frame. The Statesmen struck first in the fourth but a tally from Kearnan with 6:52 remaining gave the Griffs a 7-4 advantage. Hobart, however, scored three goals in the final 5:39 of action with Chris Aslanian's tally with just 24 seconds remaining in regulation forcing overtime.
The Griffs won the opening draw in overtime but couldn't convert their chances. Canisius forced one save from the Hobart netminder, who made the stop without his stick and was called for a penalty. Despite the backup goalie being forced into action, Canisius could not get another shot on net as time expired in the first extra session.
Hobart won the draw in the second overtime and on the team's third shot, Aslanian finished for his game-high fifth goal of the game and the game-winning tally.
Canisius outshot the Statesmen, 41-33, on the night with each team collecting 21 ground balls. Canisius was 1-of-4 with the extra-man advantage and killed the only Hobart chance of the game.
The Griffs now turn their attention toward MAAC play as the Griffs open the conference season on Saturday with a road contest at Siena. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.
