After leading the Canisius College men's lacrosse team to its first win of the 2016 campaign, sophomore attackman Connor Kearnan and senior defender Rich Stapleton were honored by the MAAC on Monday. Kearnan collected the conference's Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Stapleton was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Kearnan led the Griffs attack in the first-ever Division I international game. The Canada native set career highs with five points, three goals and two assists in his home country as the Griffs cruised to an 11-6 win versus Vermont.

In two games this season, Kearnan is tied for the team lead with six points, recording three goals and three assists in his first year in the Blue and Gold.

Stapleton anchored the Canisius defense to victory against Vermont. The senior captain drew the assignment of the Catamount's top scorer – who entered the game averaging 4.8 points per game – and held the attacker to just one point, while forcing him into seven turnovers. Overall, Stapleton anchored a defense that allowed only 20 shots in the 60-minute game – the lowest total allowed by the Griffs in seven years.

A native of Rome, N.Y., Stapleton has totaled three ground balls and one caused turnovers in two games this season.

Both Kearnan and Stapleton earned the weekly accolade for the first time in their career.

Kearnan, Stapleton and the Griffs look to continue their winning ways with a game against in-state foe Hobart on Tuesday. First faceoff at the Demske Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
