Softball Shut Out by Akron

Akron scored single runs in the bottom of the second, third and fourth innings and Canisius left seven runners on base as the Zips posted a 3-0 victory over the Golden Griffins Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Capital Invitational in Washington, D.C. The win moves Akron to 13-10 on the year, while the Griffs slipped to 4-16 with their fourth-straight loss.

Akron took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI-single to right off the bat of Anna Tarpley, and the Zips stretched their lead to 2-0 in the home-half of the third when Akron's Savannah Fruin scored from third base on a double-steal. Akron capped the scoring in the fourth inning when Caitlin Gambone scored on a Canisius error.

The Griffs were credited with six hits in the loss, with sophomore Moriah Harris and junior Lindsey Silfer each posting two base hits for the Blue and Gold. Junior Jessica Berzins reached base twice in the game with a base hit and by drawing a walk.

Akron pitcher Erin Seiler picked up her second win against Canisius in as many days after she went the distance and gave up six hits while fanning five. Sophomore Madi Weathers allowed three runs on six hits with a strikeout and a walk in the losing effort for the Griffs.

Canisius will return to action March 18-20 when the team travels to play in George Mason's annual Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, Va. The Griffs will play two games March 18, starting with St. Francis (Pa.) at 12:15 p.m., before meeting Georgetown at 4:45 p.m.
