Akron Takes Down Softball, 5-1

Akron shortstop Carley Childress went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBI, and starting pitcher Erin Seiler allowed one run on two hits to go with seven strikeouts as the Zips defeated Canisius 5-1 Saturday morning on the second day of the Capital Invitational in Washington, D.C. The win improved Akron to 10-10 overall, while the Golden Griffins fell to 4-15 with the loss.

Akron took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-triple by Childress, but the Griffs knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on the power of a solo home run by senior Meghan Cuda. For Cuda, it was her second homer of the season and the 13th of her career, which ties her for ninth in program history. That run would be the Griffs' only tally of the day, as Seiler shut down Canisius' bats and allowed just one Canisius base runner to reach third base in the game's final five frames.

Canisius had two hits in the losing effort, with senior Alexis Roman reaching first safely on a bunt-single in the bottom-half of the first. Akron pounded out nine hits for the game, led by Childress' three base knocks.

Sophomore Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle after she allowed five runs on nine hits to go with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Blue and Gold will close out their weekend trip to the nation's capital on Sunday when the team plays a single game against Akron. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
