Softball Makes Short Work of Wagner

Canisius sophomore Moriah Harris and junior Lindsey Silfer had back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first and sophomore pitcher Erika Mackie posted her first shutout of the season, as the Golden Griffins ended a five-game losing skid with a 3-0 win over Wagner Sunday morning on the final day of the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. Canisius is now 2-10 on the year, while the Seahawks fell to 2-3 with the loss.

After Mackie set the Wagner team down in order in the first, Harris and Silfer put the Blue and Gold up 2-0 with a pair of solo home runs with two outs in the home-half of the first frame. Both players are tied for the team lead with three homers a piece this season. Those two runs were more than enough support for Mackie, who earned her second win of the season in the circle after giving up just three hits. Wagner only had one runner reach third base in the game.

The Griffs added on an insurance run in the third after Silfer ripped an RBI-single back up the middle to score senior Meghan Cuda. Canisius had six hits in the win, with Silfer going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

Canisius will return to action on Saturday, March 5, when the team plays in the Miami (Ohio) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. The Griffs will meet Western Illinois and IUPUI on March 5 before playing the same two teams on Sunday, March 6.
