Softball Drops a Pair of One-Run Games

The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of one-run games on Saturday, falling to Towson 6-5 in the first game of the day before losing to Winthrop 8-7 in the nightcap at the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Golden Griffins have now dropped five straight to fall to 1-10 on the season. Canisius will close out its stay in South Carolina on Sunday when the Blue and Gold plays Wagner, with first pitch set for 10 a.m.

Game One - Towson 6, Canisius 5
Canisius' late rally fell short, as the Towson Tigers improved to 9-3 on the season with a 6-5 win at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C. The Tigers held a 6-2 lead after two innings of play, but Canisius scored twice in the sixth to cut into Towson's lead at 6-4.

In the sixth, freshman Allie Block hit her first career home run, a two-run shot down the left field line, to make the score 6-4 in favor of Towson. Canisius junior Lindsey Silfer drove in teammate Jessica Berzins from second base in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Blue and Gold was not able to push the game-tying run across the plate.

Berzins went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, with Silfer and freshman Lauren Castro and Denver Keller posting two hits apiece in the losing effort. Keller also scored a run in the loss for Canisius, which collected a season-high 10 hits in the game.

Castro made her first career start and took the loss after she allowed six runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Towson starter Megan Dejter went the distance and picked up the win in the circle after she allowed five runs on 10 hits while striking out three.

Game Two - Winthrop 8, Canisius 7
Paige Haley's two-out single to center allowed teammate Morgan Lowers to score from third base to help lift the host Winthrop Eagles (7-7) to an 8-7 victory over Canisius Saturday evening. Winthrop scored three runs in the seventh to secure the win.

Winthrop led 5-0 after three frames, but the Griffs answered with a six-run fourth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Silfer. In that inning, Berzins, senior Meghan Cuda and sophomore Moriah Harris all reached base with three-straight singles, and then Silfer followed by clearing the bases with her grand slam. Freshman Kaitlin Ishman had an RBI-single in the fourth and Berzin also had an RBI-hit in the frame as well as Canisius scored six runs on eight hits to take the lead.

Silfer scored another run in the fifth on a second RBI-single by Ishman to give the Griffs a 7-5 lead, but the three runs in the home-half of the seventh led the Eagles to a walk-off victory.

After banging out 10 hits in the first game of the day, the Blue and Gold was credited with 11 hits in game two, with Berzins, Harris, Castro, and Ishman all recording multi-hit games in the loss.
