Softball Swept at Winthrop Event

The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of games on the first day of the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday. The Golden Griffins lost to Appalachian State 8-2 in the first game of the day before falling 5-1 to Brown in the nightcap. Canisius is now 1-8 on the season.

Game One - Appalachian State 8, Canisius 2
Canisius trailed 2-0 early, but senior Meghan Cuda cut that lead in half to 2-1 with a solor homer in the top of the third. The Griffs knotted the game at 2-2 in the in the fourth thanks to an RBI-triple by junior Jessica Berzins, but the Mountaineers (1-10) scored twice in the fifth and then four times in the sixth to secure the win.

Canisius had eight hits in the loss, with junior Lindsey Silfer recording two hits in the losing effort. Freshman hurler Allie Block took the loss in relief. She came into the game after sophomore Erika Mackie allowed two runs on two hits while fanning five in four innings of work.

Game Two - Brown 5, Canisius 1
Brown scored a win in its season-opener on the power of Katie Orona's two-hitter, as the Bears defeated the Griffs 5-1. Brown scored three runs through the game's first two innings and then tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

Canisius got on the board in the seventh on an RBI-ground out from freshman Kaitlin Ishman. Berzins and Silfer each had in a hit in the losing effort for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius will continue its stay at the Winthrop/Adidas Tournament on Saturday, with a pair of games against Towson and host Winthrop.
