Softball Falls Twice at Titan Classic

The Canisius softball team fell to 0-4 to start the season after dropping a pair of games of the second day of the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif. A two-run rally in the top-half of the seventh lifted UTSA to a 3-2 win over the Golden Griffins in the first game, and then the team lost to host Cal State Fullerton 8-0 in five innings.

Canisius will close out the Titan Classic on Sunday, Feb. 14, when the team meets Weber State at 12 p.m., Eastern time.

GAME 1 – UTSA 3, Canisius 2
Canisius junior Lindsey Silfer broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, but the UTSA Roadrunners scored twice in the top-half of the seventh to secure a 3-2 win at Anderson Field in Fullerton, Calif.

ITSA scored the game's first run in the top of the third, but the Griffs answered with a run in the home-half of the fourth on an RBI-double by freshman Lauren Castro that pushed fellow freshman Kaitlin Ishman across the plate. The score would remain tied at 1-1 until the sixth, when Silfer led off the bottom of that frame with a solo blast to center, the team's first home run of the season.

In the seventh, UTSA's Randee Crawford led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2, and later in that inning, Madison Kinley ripped a double to left center that allowed the game-wining run to score. UTSA improved to 2-2 on the year with the win.

Silfer had two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the loss for the Griffs, while Castro, sophomore Moriah Harris and senor Meghan Cuda had doubles for Canisius. Sophomore pitcher Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle after she allowed three runs on 11 hits while striking out two and walking three.

GAME 2 – Cal State Fullerton 8, Canisius o – Five Innings
The host Cal State Fullerton Titans improved to 3-1 on the year with an 8-0 win over Canisius in five innings. The Titans broke the game open with four runs in the third and then the two more runs in the fourth.

Cal State Fullerton ended the game with eight hits, while winning pitcher Sydney Golden allowed one hit and struck out four in five innings of work. Cuda had the game's only base hit for the Blue and Gold and she also stole a base.

Freshman pitcher Allie Block took the loss in her first collegiate start after she allowed five runs on five hits to go with a strikeout and two walks.

GAME NOTES
Canisius is 0-4 for the second-straight season… Silfer's home run was the 10th of her career, which makes her the 19th player in school history to hit 10 or more home runs in her career… Harris has reached base safely in 11 of the last 12 games she's played in, dating back to the end of last season.
