The Weber State Wildcats pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of three Canisius errors en route to a 10-5 win over the Golden Griffins Sunday morning on the final day of the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The win moves Weber State to 4-1 on the season while the Griffs slipped to 0-5.
Canisius took an early 3-0 lead after sophomore Moriah Harris hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Junior Jessica Berzins started the game off with a base hit and then she moved to second when senior Meghan Cuda lined a single to left for one of her two hits on the day. Harris followed Cuda in the batting order and cleared the bases with a three-run shot over the fence in left field, her first homer of the 2016 season.
Weber State wasted little time answering the Griffs, scoring two in the top of the second, and the Wildcats took advantage of two Canisius fielding errors to score four times in the third to take a 6-3 lead. Weber State led 10-3 after scoring four times in the top-half of the sixth, but Canisius got cut into that cushion when junior Lindsey Silfer scored on a wild pitch in the home-half of that frame. Canisius added a single run in the seventh when Silfer drew a bases loaded walk that allowed teammate Tori Nappo to score from third.
Cuda and Harris each had two hits in the loss for the Blue and Gold while Silfer went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle for Canisius after she allowed eight runs, five earned, on eight hits while walking one.
Canisius will wrap-up its season-opening trip to California on Monday when the team plays a non-league doubleheader at UC-Riverside. Game one is set to start at 3 p.m., Eastern time.
