Rowing to Compete at the Mercyhurst Invitational

WEEKEND PREVIEW:
The Canisius rowing program heads to the Mercyhurst Invitational for its third regatta of the fall season on Saturday. The race day begins at 11:00 a.m. at Findley Lake, N.Y.

LAST WEEKEND:
The Canisius College rowing program topped the field in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four races, as the squad compete at the Hobart/William Smith Challenge on the Canal in Geneva, N.Y., last Saturday.

The varsity eight featured Patricia Beaulieu, Molly Murphy, Kathryn Hobika, Jessica Fabian, Brooke Stanley, Kira Voyer, Sydney Bichsel, Alexandra Heinz, and Kaitlyn Taylor, posted the best time in their respective race, with a time of 16:29.

The second varsity eight consisting of Emma Vicaretti, Michelle Turner, Alexandria Holt, Chanel Davis, Tara Federow, Madeline Kurka, Bridget Lillis, Shannon Pritzker and Grace Horner, came out on top with a time of 17:40, a little over a minute ahead of RIT.

The varsity fours also found success with the Griffs placing boats in the top-two spots.

The second varsity varsity four of Stanley, Voyer, Bichsel, Heinz and Horner clocked in with the top time of 18:42.

Meanwhile teammates Fabian, Hobika, Murphy, Beaulieu, and Taylor finished 10 seconds later with a time 18:42.

William Smith finished third with a time of 19:14, while Canisius third varsity four, consisting of Vicaretti, Kurka, Federow, Pritzker, and Gianna Ortolani placed fourth with a time of 19:28.

The fourth and final Griffs varsity four placed fifth, as Liz DelBarba, Mackenzie App, Erin Grim and Misa Gamble, finished with a time of 19:46.

COACH FURTEK'S THOUGHTS ABOUT THE WEEKEND:
"We've had another great week of training and have seen strong improvement in our technical performance.  It's satisfying to see all of our women working toward the best application of their growing power — and in particular to see several of our rowers have breakthrough 'aha!' moments.  We enter our Fall Camp today and everyone is looking forward to a break from classes and a chance to accelerate the learning on the water.

"This weekend's race is an interesting combination of a 5k head race loop and a 500m sprint dash, against a solid Mercyhurst crew.  Their coach, Adrian Spracklen, is just back from a year of coaching the Russian national team, so we expect them to be well-prepared and ready to race.  It's a perfect next-step challenge for us.  We're all looking forward to it."

LOOKING AHEAD:
• Following Saturday's race, the Griffs prepare for its home regatta of the fall season, in the Head of the Niagara/Wright Regatta on Sun. Oct. 16.
• After the Head of the Niagara, Canisius heads into the crown jewel of the fall season, the Head of the Charles on Oct. 22.
