With the help of four members of the Canisius College women's lacrosse program, Canada earned its first-ever gold medal in field women's lacrosse history, topping the four-time reigning champion United States team at the 2015 FIL Under-19 World Championship, 9-8, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Canisius head coach Scott Teeter also served as the head coach of the Canadian team. The two-time MAAC Coach of the Year and leader of the four-time MAAC Champions, Teeter guided Canada to not only its first-ever appearance in the title game and championship but also the team's first-ever victory over the United States (Canada had never even been within single digits versus its neighbor before this tournament).
“I could not be more proud of how the girls played,” Teeter said. “Everything we worked for the last two years came together today and we were able to make history, bringing gold back to Canada. Erica played so well this entire tournament and was rewarded with All-World Team honors. She had such a good freshman year (in 2015) and will only grow in the future with this experience. Tessa and Brenna also played such a key role for us and I can't wait to get them on campus in the fall.”
Rising sophomore Erica Evans played a key role throughout the tournament to earn All-World Team accolades. The 2015 MAAC Midfielder and Rookie of the Year led Canada in scoring throughout the 10-day championship and finished with 29 points and 24 goals in eight games. Evans was held off the scoreboard in the title game but contributed two draw controls and one ground ball.
Incoming freshmen Tessa Chad and Brenna Shanahan also contributed to the championship team. Shanahan scored in Saturday's victory, while also adding a ground ball.
The previous best finish for Canada was a bronze medal during the 1999, 2003 and 2011 tournaments.
