The Golden Griffins rowing team traveled to Saratoga, N.Y., this weekend to compete in the New York State Collegiate Championship on Fish Creek. The Griffs raced against some very strong competition, including MAAC rival Marist, who the team will face again in the MAAC Championships on May 17-18.
"It was a beautiful day for racing, and a great respite from the harsh winter and spring. Our performance did not rise to the conditions or the competition; we'll be redoubling our efforts to produce speed on race day in two weeks at the MAAC championship," said head coach Joel Furtek.
The Blue and Gold's Varsity-4 of Melissa Frank, Allie Glick, Meg Walsh, Liz DelBarba and Kaity Taylor was the team's strongest performing boat on the day, finishing fourth overall in the Grand Final.
"Our four had the best performance of the day, with a commanding row in the heat and a gritty final race that came up just short of the medals," said Furtek. "Our eights stumbled in the heats and the Second Varisty-8 rose to the challenge in winning the petite final, while the Varsity-8 improved but not enough."
The NYS Collegiate Championship was the Griffs final regatta before the team competes in the MAAC Championship May 17-18 in West Windsor, N.J.
