Box Score Needing a win to earn the final bid for the MAAC Tournament, the Canisius College men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-6 loss at Detroit on Saturday afternoon. The Griffs finish the season with a 3-12 record and a 2-4 mark in conference play, while the Titans advance to the MAAC Tournament with an 8-5 overall record and 4-2 conference record.
Three Griffs led the team with two points on the day. Senior Tim Edwards finished his outstanding career with the Blue and Gold with two points on a goal and an assist. With his two points, he moved into a tie for eighth in the program's history with 145 career points and also finished his career in fourth with 80 career assists. Edwards also went 7-for-13 in faceoffs on the day to go along with a game-high nine ground balls.
Graduate student Christopher Kane and sophomore Jeff Edwards led the Griffs with two tallies each, while senior Sam Connors also added a tally.
Senior Alex Govenettio played a strong game between the pipes in his final collegiate game, stopping 15 shots to anchor the defense.
The Titans jumped on the Griffs early and never looked back to clinch the bid to the MAAC Tournament. Detroit netted the only two goals of the first quarter and then scored the first five goals of the second frame in just 4:39 to grab a commanding 7-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game. Jeff Edwards scored a pair of man-up goals to end the Canisius drought but the Titans also added two more tallies to head into the locker room with a 9-2 advantage.
The Griffs upped their game in the second half but the early deficit proved to be too much of a hole to dig out of. Canisius scored the only two tallies of the third stanza and each netted a pair of goals in the fourth quarter as Detroit secured the 11-6 victory thanks to its strong start.
Canisius finished the game with a slight edge in shots, 43-41, while the Titans held the advantage in faceoffs, 13-8, and ground balls, 37-24.
Scott Drummond led the Titans with four points and three goals, while Jason Weber earned the win between the pipes with 17 saves.
Game Notes: With a Canisius-best 30 points in 2015, Tim Edwards became just the third Griff to lead the team in scoring three times during his career, joining current head coach Randy Mearns (1990-92) and Kevin Ross (2004-07) … Edwards also finished his career with a .558 faceoff winning percentage, the third-best mark in program history … Senior Adam Donner led the Griffs with two caused turnovers on Saturday and moved into third place in the school's record with 41 career caused turnovers … The 12 losses are the most in program history – Canisius had lost 11 games in four previous seasons (1990, 1991, 1996, 1998) … Canisius was attempting to qualify for the MAAC Tournament in consecutive years for the first time since three-straight trips from 2006 to 2008.
