After leading the Canisius College men's lacrosse team to a key conference victory, senior goalkeeper Alex Govenettio earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Monday.
In a 10-9 overtime victory against MAAC rival Siena on Saturday, Govenettio recorded 14 saves to anchor the Canisius defense. The senior made 11 stops in the first three quarters of the game to keep the Griffs in the contest long enough for a fourth-quarter rally.
In nine games during his senior campaign, Govenettio owns a 10.93 goals against average and .497 save percentage. The senior netminder has anchored a strong Canisius defense to start conference play, leading the Griffs to a 2-1 start with a 7.31 goals against average and .633 save percentage.
The weekly accolade is the third for Govenettio during his career.
Govenettio and the Griffs continue MAAC play with a road contest at Monmouth. The schools are set to meet on Saturday at 3 p.m.
