Canisius freshman first baseman Ryan Stekl and senior pitcher Devon Stewart have been named the MAAC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced today.
Stekl earned MAAC Player of the Week honors after he started his collegiate career in style. The Lancaster, N.Y. native hit .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI in his first three college games at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, S.C. In the Golden Griffins' 8-6 win over Old Dominion Feb. 15, Stekl went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. He has recorded multiple hits in each of his first three career games in a Canisius uniform and he currently boasts a .643 on-base percentage and a .769 slugging percentage. Defensively, Stekl recorded a team-high 33 putouts in the team's first three games and was also credited three defensive assists.
Stewart was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week after he picked up his first win of the season on the hill Feb. 15, in Canisius' 8-6 win over Old Dominion. In that game, Stewart allowed one run, which was unearned, on five hits while striking out three and walking three in 6.2 innings of work. The victory for Stewart, the 18th in his career, came after he threw 88 total pitches and he allowed just four Old Dominion base runners to reach third base.
Canisius is 1-2 on the year after falling to Coastal Carolina on Monday. The Griffs will close out their season-opening stay in Conway, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon when the team plays Coastal Carolina again, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
