Junior midfielder Jeff Edwards and senior defender Rich Stapleton of the Canisius College men's lacrosse team were both named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team, announced during the league's preseason show on Wednesday.
A two-year starter in the midfield, Edwards has totaled 48 points in his career with 22 goals and 26 assists. A MAAC All-Rookie Team selection in 2014, Edwards set career bests as a sophomore with 26 points, 13 goals and 13 assists. He tied for the team lead with 13 assists, ranked third in points and fourth in goals.
Stapleton has been one of the team's anchors on defense since first arriving on campus in 2013. The Rome, New York native has appeared in 43 career games with 37 starting assignments, collecting 46 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers during his collegiate tenure. A 2013 MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, Stapleton was a key anchor the top scoring defense in the MAAC during his sophomore campaign.
As a team, the Griffs were placed sixth in the preseason poll. Defending champion Marist is slated to repeat with 47 points and is followed by Quinnipiac (41), Monmouth (36), Detroit and Siena (24), Canisius (17) and Manhattan (7).
Edwards and Stapleton are two key returners from a team that brings back 21 letterwinners and four starters. Canisius finished the 2015 campaign with a 3-12 record, including a 2-4 mark in conference play.
