Box Score The Canisius volleyball team trailed Marist by four points late in the fifth set, battled back to take the lead, but eventually fell 17-15 to the Red Foxes Sunday afternoon in the McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The loss, the Golden Griffins' second five-set loss of the weekend, moved the team to 9-19 overall and 7-9 in MAAC play, while Marist improved to 19-9 overall and 12-5 in conference action.
Junior Katlyn Tyler had a team-high 16 kills and posted 18 digs in the loss for the Griffs, while fellow junior Jacklyn Malusa added 18 kills, 20 digs and two block assists to the losing effort. Senior setter Grace Streicher had 45 assists for Canisius, which hit .228 as a team on the day. Fellow senior Rachel Kline recorded 28 digs for Canisius, which fell to 2-3 in five-set matches on the year.
Canisius took the first set by a score of 25-22 before the host Red Foxes came back to square the match up with a 25-16 victory in the second set. After the 10-minute intermission, Canisius took a 2-1 lead in the contest with a 25-21 win, but Marist forced a fifth set by earning a 25-16 win in the fourth set.
In the fifth and deciding set, Canisius trailed 13-9 late, but the Blue and Gold were able to take a 14-13 lead thanks to a 5-0 run, which was started on a side-out kill by sophomore Alexandra Brown. Back-to-back kills by Tyler put the Griffs within one at 13-12, and then a pair of kills by Malusa out of a Marist timeout gave Canisius a 14-13 lead, the team's first lead in the fifth set since the score was 2-1 in favor of Canisius. Marist tied the game at 14-14, but a kill by Tyler off a Streicher pass put Canisius back ahead at 15-14. That would be the Griffs' final lead of the day however, as Marist took advantage of two kills from Kelsey Lahey and a Canisius ball-handling error to seal the victory. The win for Marist was the Red Foxes' seventh in their last nine outings.
“Once again, we came up short against one of the top teams in our conference,” Canisius head coach Cathy Hummel said. “It was a tough weekend result-wise. I am proud of my team and I am disappointed for them as well. They played with heart. We need to regroup and get ready for our last regular-season home weekend.”
Canisius will close out the 2015 regular season Nov. 14-15, with a pair of home dates. The Griffs will host Rider Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m., and then meet Saint Peter's Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m., on Senior Day. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
Canisius and Niagara are currently tied for the sixth and final spot in the MAAC Volleyball Championship field with identical 7-9 league records heading into the final weekend of the regular season, however, Niagara holds the tiebreaker in the playoff scenario.
