Box Score The Canisius College volleyball team was six-points away from upsetting one of the top teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon, however Siena bested the Griffs in five sets, to improve 15-10 and 11-4 in conference play. With the loss, the injury-laden Griffs dropped to 9-18 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
“After having to roll not one, but two new lineups, I'm proud of the team's effort today, especially our seniors,” head coach Cathy Hummel said. “We needed a little luck on our side and didn't get it in this match.”
The Griffs won the first set 26-24, but were handled in the second 25-11. Canisius rebounded in the third with a 29-27 win. However the Saints combatted that with a fourth set victory 25-15, before taking the final frame 15-9 to win the match.
As a team the Blue and Gold posted a .092 hitting percentage with 49 kills and 32 errors on 185 total attacks. Siena proved to be more efficient with its attack, as the squad registered 72 kills and 29 on 206 attacks for a .205 hitting percentage.
Katlyn Tyler had the most kills on the team during the match as she notched 19 kills and 19 digs to post a double-double. Tyler did struggle with accuracy as she also notched 13 errors on 60 attacks for a .100 hitting percentage.
Lauren Siebert was once again a force in the middle, tallying 14 kills and just five errors for a team-best .231 hitting percentage.
Gracei Streicher secured 42 assists, as she distributed the ball around on offense. She was also just one dig shy of a double-double, with nine.
After seeing its 2-1 lead, knotted up by Siena following a 25-15 fourth-set victory, Canisius fell behind 5-1 early in the final frame. Kills from Rachel Kline and Tyler, coupled with an attack error by Brianna Flagg, brought the score to 5-4. However that's as close as the Blue and Gold would get as the Saints closed out the match on a 10-5 run.
The Griffs will cap its final road swing on Sunday as the squad takes on Marist at 1 p.m. Following the match, Canisius will host two final games, with a Saturday contest against Rider and Sunday match against Saint Peter's. Both matches slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
