After leading the Canisius College men's lacrosse team to a win its season opener at Boston University, junior goalkeeper Alex Govenettio collected MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, announced by the conference on Monday.
The Derby, N.Y. native recorded 11 saves and yielded just three tallies in the Griffs' 9-3 win against the Terriers – the team's first season-opening victory since the 2002 season. His .786 save percentage is tops nationally and the three goals allowed is the fewest for Canisius since a 9-3 win against Mount St. Mary's on April 4, 2009.
Govenettio and the Griffs return to action on Saturday, playing Air Force in Denver. Game time is set for 1 p.m. ET.
