Box Score The Canisius volleyball team lost in three sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-14) to No. 2 seed Siena College in the quarterfinals of the 2014 MAAC Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The No. 7 seed Golden Griffins are eliminated from the championship bracket and will now play in the consolation bracket, facing No. 9 seed Saint Peter's at 11 a.m. on Friday. The winner of that match will play No. 5 seed Rider at 2 p.m.
Sophomore Katlyn Tyler led Canisius with 12 kills, her sixth-straight match with double-digit kills. Junior Grace Streicher had 31 assists while junior Lauren Siebert and sophomore Jacklyn Malusa each had seven kills.
“Siena played really well today and showed why they were one of the top teams in our league this season,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Our serving and passing wasn't good enough in this match. We didn't give up and have to regroup to continue to get better the rest of the weekend.”
Siena (17-14) posted a .485 attack percentage en route to winning the opening set. A kill from Tyler cut the Siena lead to 13-12 before the Saints cored the next three points to go up 16-12. Canisius couldn't get back into the set as Siena went up 1-0.
In the second set, Canisius (9-20) built a 16-13 lead after taking advantage of three consecutive Siena errors. The Saints responded by winning the next five points to go up 18-16. The Griffs battled back to knot the score at 19-19 on a block from Siebert and Tyler. Siena went on a five-point run, including two service aces, to take control and go up 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, Siena built a 10-4 lead and maintained at least a four-point lead during the rest of the set as the Saints closed out the match.
Sonja Vasovic and Rachel Stoklosa each had 11 kills while Meghann Wright had 10 kills. Haley Howell added 36 assists.
Notes: Canisius and Siena met in the postseason for the seventh time and the Saints have won six of those meetings… Senior Emily Litwin posted 17 digs and now has 557 digs on the season, which ranks fourth in program history… The Griffs did not have a service ace for the first time in the 2014 season.
