Box Score The Canisius volleyball team lost in three sets to Iona College in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon, falling 25-21, 25-21, 25-19 and dropping to 6-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Katlyn Tyler led Canisius with 11 kills on the day while junior Rachel Kline had her 10th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. Senior Emily Litwin posted 24 digs while junior Grace Streicher had her eighth double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs.
“We didn't take care of things on our side of the net, especially with our passing during the first two sets of the match,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We came out with the energy and emotion to start the third set, but ran out of gas at the end. You have to give credit to Iona for playing well.
"We have to regroup from this and move on for the final month of the season.”
Canisius built an 11-6 lead in the first set after a kill from Streicher, but Iona grabbed control of the set with an 8-1 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Gaels extended their lead to as many as six points en route to winning the first set. In the second set, Iona (6-18, 3-9 MAAC) followed a similar formula as the Gaels broke it open with a 7-1 run to take a 16-12 lead and went on to go up 2-0 in the match.
Canisius jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set after the second kill in the early going of the set from Kline. The Griffs held a 15-10 lead before Iona won 15 of the final 19 points in the set to close out the match.
Shannon Ward and Karly White led Iona with 13 kills apiece. Natalie Ziskin had 41 assists and 10 digs.
Canisius returns to the road next weekend for two matches in New Jersey. The Griffs will play at Rider on Saturday, with match time set for 1 p.m.
Notes: Tyler had 11 or more kills for the fifth time in six matches… 12 of Litwin's 24 digs came in the third set… The point that put Canisius up 3-1 in the third set featured 24 attack attempts and 20 digs while taking nearly two minutes… Canisius and Iona split the regular-season series for the third consecutive season.
