Despite dominating possession throughout the game, the Canisius College men's soccer team fell at Siena on Wednesday afternoon, 1-0. The loss drops the Griffs to 7-4-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in MAAC play, while the first-place Saints improve to 9-5-0 and 4-1-0 against conference foes.
“I thought we played well today but just couldn't catch a break,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “We definitely had some good scoring chances and limited Siena to very few but one slip up on a corner kick decided the game. After being on the road for two games, we are now looking forward to returning home for two conference matches.”
The Saints scored the game's only goal in the contest off a corner kick in the 23rd minute of play. The corner, which went off a Canisius defender and into the net, was credited to Matt Needham as Siena grabbed the 1-0 lead.
Canisius completely controlled the play in the second 45 minutes of action – outshooting the Saints, 9-0 – but the Griffs couldn't break through the Siena defense for the equalizing tally. The closest the Griffs came was in the 77th minute but defender Thomas Teupen had his shot ring off the post to preserve the 1-0 final.
The Griffs finished the game with a 15-4 advantage in shots on the afternoon. Junior Andrew Coughlin recorded one save on the afternoon, robbing the Saints of a second goal on a 1-on-1 situation. Josh Weiss recorded four saves to earn the victory for Siena.
Canisius looks to get back to its winning ways when the team returns home – where the Griffs are unbeaten on the season – for two MAAC games. The Griffs are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Fairfield.
